01. Introduction
...featuring "Open Your Heart"
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue & F.Kumatani Lyrics: J.Senoue & T.Fukada
The song that opens this work is the song from the opening movie of the game.
In this movie, the song is played all the time... Instead, we thought from the beginning, "Let's use only the chorus of the main theme!" I had this in mind from the very beginning.
I think the result was impact-oriented, well-paced, and full of tension.
When this song was written, we invited the Sonic Team staff to listen to it in the studio, and at that point, we were already convinced that it was going to be good.
Kumatani did exactly what we wanted in the introduction of this song.
I still get excited when I hear it. (Senoue)
The introduction, I think I did a cool job.
When the image was first communicated to me, I could easily accept it, perhaps because it also overlapped with my own image.
There was some difficulty, but after a little bit of work, we were able to gain momentum and complete the project in one fell swoop.
I am satisfied, very satisfied. (Kumatani)

02. Welcome to Station Square
Music: M.Setsumaru & J.Senoue Arrangement: J.Senoue
It is a Station Square song that can be heard frequently in the game.
Does it have a fresh urban feel?
Seed on bass does a great job. (Senoue)
The guitar's moderate wetness and the choppers' lightness are exquisite.
Next time, we'll do bossa nova! (Tokoi)
When we were in the demonstration stage (before the arrangement), we all teased each other by saying, "It's like the fresh food section of a supermarket!" I wonder if I overdid it.
But when it was completed, it turned out to be a very stylish song with a fresh breeze!
Success! Success!!! (Kumatani)
Is that a compliment? (Senoue)
That's right. (Kumatani)

Back to the list of songs

03. Event: Strain
Music & Arrangement: K.Tokoi
The most head-scratching task was to intertwine the double-layered conga rhythm with the bongos without discomfort.
The result was only possible because of Akashi-san's mixing.
The improvised piano also sounds pleasant. (Tokoi)
Just hearing the rhythm at the beginning of the song is like hearing an image of chaos.
In that sense, I think it was an effective introduction. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

04. Boss: CHAOS ver.0, 2, 4
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
I actually had a lot of trouble with the music for the Chaos boss battles, and made it all up at once in the latter half of the game.
I was looking for a unified concept for boss battles, including chaos, and ended up going for a digi-lock type of approach like this.
I thought I had created a sense of urgency, as if we were suddenly encountering an unknown person.
By the way, which Chaos do you guys like? (Senoue)
Sorry to bother you. I like Chaos ver.0 the best. (Tokoi)
I think I like Chaos ver.0 too.... (Kumatani)
Is that because it's so easy to beat? (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

05. Azure Blue World
...for Emerald Coast
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
This song is actually this long! I guess.
Some of the versions in the middle of the song had Kumatani singing "la la la la~".
Since this is Sonic's first action stage, I tried to make a song with a familiar melody. (Senoue)
La~ la~ la~ la~ (Kumatani)
Yeah, yeah.
Incidentally, the instrument playing the melody is the electric sitar. (SENOUE)

Back to the list of songs

06. Windy and Ripply
...for Emerald Coast
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
It is basically the same stage, as it is the second half of the Emerald Coast.
The melody of the chorus is the same line, but I changed it in other parts of the song.
If the first half is pop music, this one is probably a high-middle tic fusion. (Senoue)
The picking harmonics sounded like a seagull to me. (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

07. BIG fishes
at Emerald Coast...
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
When I demoed this song, everyone I played it to commented on how "oceanic" it was, how "it feels like the beach"... Do you think it has that kind of atmosphere? (Senoue)
Trinity's slide guitar on this song created a very "tropical image," so I also thought of the ocean in this song.
Best match for a fishing stage. (Tokoi)
But it's scary to see mekasana so close to a resort like that. (SENOUE)

Back to the list of songs

08. and... Fish Hits!
Music & Arrangement: K.Tokoi
This was actually a difficult one. I tried to make something a little fusion-like, but somehow it ended up being the theme song for sports news!
I like fishing a lot... (Tokoi)
I remember when Tokoi-kun was making only songs with a dark image, he said, "I'll make a bright song!" and started to work on it.
Speaking of fishing, my Sega Rally 2 song is always played at the ending of a certain fishing show....
By the way, did you guys catch any big ones? (SENOUE)

Back to the list of songs

09. Hey You! It's Time to Speed Up!!!
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
The "sha~..." sound effect that is the same as the "ki~n" in Sonic CD... I wonder if anyone noticed that?
When I was working on this song, Sonic CD was often talked about on Sonic's BBS, so I tried to use Choco... (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

10. Twinkle Cart
...for Twinkle Park
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
This song will have you thinking, "Hmm, I've heard that one before!".
In fact, it was the song I wrote for the Genesis version of "Sonic 3D Blast".
I just can't express some things with the Mega Drive sound source, and it hasn't been released in Japan (because it's not the same as the Saturn version, which is also available in Japan!) And...
So I made a new modification and recorded it. (Senoue)
I'm going to be thrown out into the universe... Me.
Do you understand? (Kumatani)

Back to the list of songs

11. Pleasure Castle
...for Twinkle Park
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
This song was written very early on.
I think it was right after the title changed from Sonic RPG to Sonic Adventure.
This stage was easy to create because it was exactly as I had imagined in many ways. (Senoue)
The lead synth tone is very pleasant, following an exciting intro like "Toyland". (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

12. Twinkle Circuit
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
I decided to use Sonic's theme as the motif for this mini-game, which was tentatively titled "Exciting Sonic Kart.
You can sing "It doesn't matter now what happens..." in the chorus, can't you? (Senoue)
Yes, so Sand Hill is the "Doki-Doki Sand Board." (Tokoi)
What's exciting?
Mine is "Piko-Piko whack-a-mole"! (Kumatani)

Back to the list of songs

13. Fakery Way
...for Twinkle Park
Music & Arrangement: F.Kumatani
I tried to make it a little eerie.
I don't think this kind of thing is very common in this game....
Did you notice the baby's laughter along the way? (Kumatani)
What? Is that a baby's laugh? (Senoue)
No, it's me. ................ Someone please plug it in. (Tokoi)
What? Was Tokoi-kun such a character? (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

14. Run Through the Speed Highway
...for Speed Highway
Music: J.Senoue Arrangement: J.Senoue & F.Kumatani
Perfect for a cool stage! I like it a lot myself.
This also has a nice Kumatani flavor.
In this soundtrack disc, I would like you to listen to the so-called "Speed Highway songs" from 14. to 16.... I hope you will listen to it. (Senoue)
I'm actually pretty good at this kind of sampling... Or rather, it's more like a hobby.
This song really fits Speed Highway. (Kumatani)

Back to the list of songs

15. Goin' Down!?
...for Speed Highway
Music & Arrangement: F.Kumatani
As I mentioned in #14, this kind of playful thing is my specialty.
Oh, but I'm making it right and serious. (Kumatani)
Coco feels good, a kind of "drug-like" sensation when running down the building.
I would like to hear a longer version of this song. (Tokoi)
But there is a sense of tension on stage and in the songs because of this length. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

16. At Dawn
...for Speed Highway
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
Morning in the city....
I tried to portray "urban-ness" from a different aspect from the Station Square song.
In fact, it is quite a favorite of mine.
By the way, the tentative title of the album was "ABBA" when I was making it. You see the piano phrase that sounds like that?
Maybe I should make a version with a song.... (Senoue)
That's right - you should record it! (Kumatani)
Then sing to Kumatani? (Senoue)
No, you're going to this place, aren't you? (Kumatani)
What, a man sings? (Tokoi)
Well, you know, it seems that Tokoi-kun has various voices.... Like a baby's voice... (Kumatani)

Back to the list of songs

17. Choose Your Buddy
-Slap Bass ver.-
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
This song at the time of the character selection has objects recorded with different ways of playing the bass: "slap" and "fingerpicking".
I like this "slap" one because it is crisp.
Tane's bass is my favorite. Let's do it together again!
By the way, slap and chopper are the same way of playing. (Senoue)
This is what I thought as I watched the recording....
He said that this person (bassist Seed-chan) is not a human being.
I like this "upeupe" chopper base a lot. (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

18. Theme of "CHAO"
Music & Arrangement: F.Kumatani
If there is anyone out there who heard this and was inspired by NiGHTS... That would be an honor for me.
Because I made it very conscious of NiGHTS' pian. (Kumatani)
I think that Chao's cuteness, lovableness... I think that the cute and lovable Chao is also well expressed. (Senoue)
Is the voice in the middle of the song Chao's voice? (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

19. Letz Get This Party Started
...for CHAO Race Entrance
Music & Arrangement: F.Kumatani
The original version looks like this, although it is edited and used in the game.
Don't you think it matches the unrealistic play, like those fancy electric signs at the entrance area of the Chao Race? (Kumatani)
Yes! Yes! I know a secret about this song.
Kumatani has a CD on his desk with the same title as this song!
Incidentally, when I first heard this song, my image of it was "like a toy wooden doll marching". (Senoue)
Yes, that's what the working title was, "Electric Parade", right? (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

20. Join Us 4 Happy Time
...for CHAO Race
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue & F.Kumatani Lyrics: J.Senoue & T.Fukada
Anyway, I made it in a "put-on" mood to make the race more fun and exciting.
Sometimes you can even hear Chao singing. (Kumatani)
Then I'm one of those being taken for a ride.
Chao races are really exciting, aren't they?
The one where you're sweating your hands all by yourself and saying, "Look, go for it! (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

21. The Dreamy Stage
...for Casinopolis
Music: F.Kumatani Arrangement: K.Tokoi
It's so cool, Tokoi-kun's arrangement....
Perfect arrangement that doesn't destroy the original melody. The piano is too nice! (Kumatani)
I wanted to change the tone of the brass and featured the muted trumpet in a big way.
I can't play the guitar very well, but when I added it to the intro, it was surprisingly good, so I made use of it.
Also, I tried not to destroy Kumatani-san's melody for the brass.
In fact, it took far longer than the next song. (tokoi)
Tokoi-kun's guitar has nuances that only Tokoi-kun can bring out.
By the way, I often play NiGHTS Pinball all the time. (Seinoue)

Back to the list of songs

22. Blue Star
...for Casinopolis
Music & Arrangement: K.Tokoi
No matter how I look at it, I have a strong image of casinos as a "big band", and I have always wanted to do it once I had the chance.
The concept of this project was "Afro Cuban", which is a jazz rhythm... (Tokoi)
In my opinion, it is probably the No. 1 song in the Tokoi-kun taste.
In fact, you were very particular about it and spent a lot of time on it, didn't you?
But I think it's really cool. (Kumatani)
Our director is a drummer, so Tokoi-kun would borrow drum instructional videos from him and work hard to check them out.
What, you haven't returned it yet? (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

23. Dilapidated Way
...for Casinopolis
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
For this stage, which I called "the fall" or "the losing course", I decided to focus on the atmosphere for now.
I dare not include the melody. (Senoue)
Even though it was a losing course, I didn't feel miserable, but rather "I'm going to crawl up!" (Tokoi)
But if you get a lot of rings at this stage and then get damaged before the last ladder or something, that's a lot of mental damage. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

24. Challange for Another Aim
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
This trial piece was inspired by the riff of the main theme "Open Your Heart".
This is what happens when you play a minor key riff in major. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

25. Theme of "Dr.EGGMAN"
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
After writing this song, I also tried to make a more playful Eggman song, but this one seemed to fit better with the atmosphere of Eggman's music.
Even though this time is another "nukezaku", doesn't it seem to be on a different level than before? (Senoue)
Fits Eggman's muddy dirty voice. (Kumatani)
Let's meet again! (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

26. Egg Mobile
...Boss: Egg Hornet
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
As mentioned in the Chaos section, this is a boss battle with a more digilock-oriented sound.
And since this Eggmobile is his mecha, I made it based on the melody of the theme song.
But I guess I don't know much about it! (Senoue)
I really like the owl-like sound effect that says "ho ho ho" in the middle of the song.
I wonder if I'll be scolded for saying it's an owl... (Kumatani)
You might be the only one who would call it an owl.
But that kind of way of perceiving things is what I like about her. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

27. Mystic Ruin
Music & Arrangement: F.Kumatani
It was hard work. Everything was a sample, but I was very particular about everything from the percussion instruments to the singing voice.
But now it is a very satisfying song. (Kumatani)
Frankly, I was shocked when I heard this.
The use of chords and tones that are important to create the atmosphere of the song, which appear in other parts of the song, without unnecessary chords in the vocal parts.... I think it is perfect in every way. (Tokoi)
Indeed! I was interested in this song for its ability to find a story and its compositional ability to put it together. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

28. Windy Hill
...for Windy Valley
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
The Windy Valley song was really the first song I wrote.
I personally called this song "THE POLICE". Not the police, but the band.
Maybe you can tell by the guitar backing phrases.
The hetauma-like harmonica phrase is the aim. (Senoue)
This song and the direction of #30 were the inspiration for the Red Mountain song (side-b #01). (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

29. Tornado
...for Windy Valley
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
For the Tornado song, I wanted to create the swell of strong winds in the song as well as in the sound effects.
Because the songs before and after this one are just so refreshing and impressive! (Se-no-e)
The song was already ready when I started this project, and at the time I thought it was very "different".
Up until now, most of Sonic's songs have been cheerful....
But it is also true that hearing this song took a load off my shoulders.
You can "write dark songs" without worrying... (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

30. The Air
...for Windy Valley
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
Two songs from the Mega Drive version of "SONIC 3D BLAST", the 10th song and this song, are DAIBA Tekki!
It fits the mood, it's a nice melody, and it was properly recorded and became even more Beppin-san. (Senoue)
If I use Tails and take a shortcut when playing this stage, it doesn't work. (Tokoi)
I, Tails, am not a fan of Speed Highway................................ (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

31. Fight for My Own Way
...Boss: Event
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
Since this was to be a battle between characters among boss battles, unlike other boss battles, we decided to use a song that pushed the rock flavor of each character, like a theme song for each character.
But in the actual game, you don't hear it until the very end. (Senoue)
The heroic melody line is similar to the Sentai Mono that I used to watch from 5:30 in the evening.... (Kumatani)

Back to the list of songs

32. Snowy Mountain
...for Icecap
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
At first I was told, "This part is only 30 seconds long!" but when I opened the lid, it was longer, so I had to add the second half.
Once I decided on the tone of the pad playing in the background, the rest came naturally. (Senoue)
But the added phrase of the odd time signature gave it a "waltz of ice" feel and made it more fashionable, didn't it? (tokoi)
Certainly, there was a sense of "not enough" with the previous ones, wasn't there?
So I tried to change the image in the latter part. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

33. Limestone Cave
...for Icecap
Music & Arrangement: F.Kumatani
"Coldness" and "Silence." These are the two concepts of this song. (Kumatani)
Snowy mountains, these limestone caves, and snowboarding.
I think IceCap has a nice crispness to it, both in terms of the game and the music. (Senoue)
I like songs like this one where you can't read the next chord progression.
In my own case, I often aim to create such a composition. (Tokoi)
In that sense, I make it straightforward. Yes. (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

34. Be Cool Be Wild, and Be Groovy
...for Icecap
Music: J.Senoue & K.Tokoi Arrangement: J.Senoue
The guitar on this song is played very, very roughly....
But, well, it fits, so let's call it good.
The bar of the arm is used in an unusual way to add various weird sounds. (SENOUE)
I was asked to "add some brass!" I added a section and a saxophone solo by the two of us.
Also, during the recording, my ears were not as calm as they used to be, so I asked Akashi-san to calmly and objectively judge whether the brass was appropriate for the image of the song. (Tokoi)
When I first heard this song in the studio, it was a mix that brought everyone's fatigue to the surface.
I remember. In the end, we had to re-mix it... This song. (Kumatani)
It was a "mix until morning" then.
From about 4:00 in the morning, I don't know what's going on anymore... (Senoue)

Back to the list of songs

35. Invincible ...No Fear!
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
This time, the Invincible song is inspired by a riff on Sonic's theme.
This song was also written at the same time as #09, so the phrases from the Sonic CD are interwoven with the bells.
You see, you can sing "Tutuso~nickwar~a~a~a".
The bass is too cool!!!! I live in the neighborhood. (Senoue)
The kind of jingles like invincible and fast-footed-kun were last minute work, weren't they? (Tokoi)

Back to the list of songs

36. Choose Your Buddy!
-Finger Bass ver.-
Music & Arrangement: J.Senoue
This is the "fingerpicking" version of song #17. This one is used in the game.
Just a few different elements can change the atmosphere so much. (Senoue)
